Weird studio cable

I've got a strange cable that looks like an XLR to TRS - except the TRS end is thinner than 1/4 inch but thicker than a 3.5mm stereo jack.  Doesn't fit any socket that I have - any ideas what it might be for ?

It is a bantam plug- they are used in patch bays.
I have all my studio on TT bays and use bantam plugs to switch between or connect up different devices.

You can get bantam to XLR/1/4 inch cables, or make them up yourself.
It is just a different way of connecting gear0 no different to the difference between 1/4 and 1/8th inch- just a slightly different form factor.

Originally used in telephone exchanges, I understand. You can get more connections within a certain surface area than you can with 1/4" jacks.

Here is one of my racks:



All of the things in the rack are connected to the patch bay- outputs on the top, inputs on the bottom.
I can connect any input to any output using bantam cables.

I love seeing rack gear (although dont own much myself), do you still get a chance to use it much in a post-VST world?
