I built a chorus - you're gonna need a bigger box

What's Hot
Just finished this, based on the BOSS CE-2. As chorus is intrinsically 80s I thought I would go all out with the art and make it as cheesy as possible.

Unfortunately due to the size of the case and wires crossing over I'm getting some faint clock noise so going to have to put it in a larger case, so annoying!

Cheers, I'm pretty happy with it. Was going for an 80s video game box style

Hope it looks ok on a 1590BB

  • Using a TL022 for the LFO can help reduce clock noise, as can using a separate bias rail for the LFO. It would be a bit of a "kludge" if you've used a PCB, but shouldn't be too difficult.

  • I used a MN3101 for clock with an MN3007 on the Madbean Pork Barrel board, can I sub a TL022 for the MN3101?

  • That is very very cool!

Have you tried shielded wire where the wires cross? Also using it with a decent isolated psu is a must, clock noise can be a big problem when daisy-chaining. Looks awesome by the way. :-)

I haven't can you recommend some shielded wire I could purchase?

yeah I tried it with an isolated supply and it was the same

  • Ah, The Pork Barrel already has a separate bias rail for the LFO. The LFO chip is the TL062. It might be worth trying a TL022 instead, as it has a lower current consumption and shouldn't tick as much.
I'd try a larger value for C22, something like 220uF, plus a 100uF cap across the LFO bias rail (positive leg of the cap to pin 2 of IC4, negative to ground).

The graphics are great. I doubt you could get more Eighties if you tried!

By the way, do you mind if I ask where you got your 3007/3101 from? They are becoming much harder to find at a reasonable price.

Thanks man, TL022 ordered, I'll give that a go before I try desoldering any capacitors.

I got the clock and delay chip from musikding.de

Needs the word "Turbo" somewhere on there to be truly 80's!

If I have to do a new box then it's definitely going to be the "1986 Turbo Chorus 16V"

power in sockets should be at the top of the pedal no?

Should they? I've got loads of pedals with power sockets on the side. Anyway it wouldn't fit at the top, too many components on the PCB up there
