I seem to remember reading that Allan Holdsworth got a custom SynthAxe made with a shorter scale length (no simple task, given the technology).
If you look at the SynthAxe you'll notice that all the frets are equally spaced, unlike the guitar, and AH thought the spacing originally chosen made some of his chosen chord inversions difficult. A bit like constantly trying to play huge stretches down the bottom of a conventional fretboard, I guess.
He had a custom neck with a smaller, though still constant, fret spacing.
