    Zendrive and Wampler Pinnacle

I really want to try the lazy J cruiser at some point but after trying dozens of drive pedals the zen and pinnacle haven't been topped to mid gain and higher gain pedals into a clean amp.

  • My old Marshall GV-2.  Sorta miss it a bit, so fat!

For lower gain grit, the VS route 66 works great with bass boost off into heavy rhythm for tighter riffing, or bass boost on into a clean channel for a nice warm drive.

But I think I preferred the Bad Monkey, weirdly enough.

I refer the honourable gentleman to my earlier response in the "this drive pedal makes such a lovely noise with my strat..." thread....

i.e Danelectro Transparent OD V1 or @MattG's OCD with the gain down and the filter switch set to "HP" :-)
Don't ask me, I just play the damned thing...

    Zendrive and derivatives of.
    Rat and derivatives of.
Red Llama. Better with a dirtier amp.
Super Hard On. Again, better with a dirtier amp.

I think HB guitars are very picky with dirt pedals, to be honest.

And I have it........And use it regularly.........

It's got a nice classic Marshall sound, kind like Deep Purple at their finest.

I also like a Bad Monkey, but as a boost into a dirty amp, rather than a plain old dirty box....

My other favourite (ATM) is the Marshall JH-1 but that's a higher gain-type Marshall sound, more like 80's Judas Priest.

  • Hi all,

This is my first post in this forum (as I couldn't find a welcome thread?) I was a regular poster on Music Radar and have been a bit lost since it's demise - no idea why it's taken me so long to find this forum though! No doubt it will be a bad thing for my wallet now that I have access to pedal classifieds again!!

So many pedals I've used that sounded great with my LP:

    Blackstar HT Dual
    Plexitone
    Dr. Scientist Elements
    Dano TOD V1 and V2
Marshall Guv'nor V2 (awesome and always overlooked!)
    Wampler Super Plextortion
    Weehbo JCM Drive
    OCD

Yeah, I meant in context of going into a dirty amp.

The gv2 was champ for going into a clean amp. Like you said, it's just a brilliant Marshall sound from that sort of era. Very cool.

    Might need another one. Hmm.

  • Visual Sound Jeckyl and Hyde with bass boost engaged into clean amp. Nobels PRE-01 into breaking up amp is instant Soundgarden. Also another happy Guvnor user (until the footswitch died). Brilliant for QOTSA type stuff. Just bought an old Pearl DS06, which has a kind of 6 band parametric filter, which is sounding brilliant. I'm also taking delivery of the intriguing Zinky o/d in the classifieds this week, so hopefully will be able to say that next week.

Liquid Sunshine for tweedy almost clean.
Box of Rock / Distortron for vintage Marshall sounds
Crunchbox for fat slash like JCM800 tones
Shredmaster for low end that makes your teeth rattle
AMT C2 for massive high gain amp like chunk
AMT P2 for metal insanity and squeelies
    RAT for classic distortion sounds

  • Assuming first a great clean tone, most reviews you hear are using a horrible dead and dull or slightly crunchy tone - if that's you're starting point then you have more options. So basically I'm not EQing the amp to benefit the drive. Which makes most of my Wamplers a bit redundant. A lot of drives sound great (really great fun) at home but crap live, like the Pinnacle unless you're doing some amp EQ which compromises the clean.

With 'buckers it's the Analogman King of Tone V2 together with a Maxon OD9 silver mod. KOT on its own for crunch both for smooth lead. The PlexiDrive is close. Dual fusion is very similar to what I'm already using. They give more of what you've got without sounding muddy or harsh.
