Considering that the M Audio can be had for £18 , there is nothing close, the Boss FV is a lot bigger and nearer the £80 mark

Depends which Boss you get. The FV50H is plastic but sensibly sized, well made and works well as an expression pedal

I've got the Moog and a Boss but prefer the Moog.
For small there's the AMT and there's a new DOD ( or Digitech,can't quite remember) although both North of £50.

I couldn't get it to work with a HOG. I had to get an M-Audio one. Different pot resistances apparently

Odd. I have the FV50H working with a BOSS PS-5, a Mobius, a Source Audio Nemesis delay and even a Zoom G3.

Some pedals are picky. 
TC are for example.

A simple passive volume pedal can be used as an expression pedal.  I wonder if that might be a viable inexpensive approach?  See here:

Mind me asking what you'll be using it with? I'm on the look out for an expression pedal too, but ideally one that will work with both a TC Flashback x3 and Line 6 M5, but I understand that this is a problem?

A boss RE-20. 

Needs a Roland ev-5 or equivalent. Think I'll get the m-audio, it's only for mucking around just now so don't see the value in getting anything more expensive.

I also tried that with the HOG without any success.

+1 for the Moog EP3. I did the same thing your thinking and bought the m audio first as i didn't want to spend alot on an expression pedal, the m-audio is really cheaply made and broke within a month. Worth spending another £20 to get the moog, really impressed with mine

The M Audio is also unusual in having a polarity switch
