Had some time today to start putting this together:

Pine tele body sourced from this parish.
Neck is a Mighty Mite second (tuner holes are too big apparently).
Pickups by Irongear.
Bridge & tuners by Wilkinson.
Other bits 'n bobs from the parts drawer & Axetec.

Pink socks? Or are they slipper socks?

You'll have to keep this one going so we know how the pine translates into sonic goodness. Nice.

Pink toe ends on the socks (thought I'd cropped them out).

Wiring to be done Wednesday hopefully :)

  • Hi
I am very interested to hear the finished result, I have erred several times on the Pine Tele.
I saw Bill Kerchin some years ago not long after he got the Rick Kelly Pine Tele and I was
really  keen to put one together. Then I read up abit and from what Bill had said it had come from
really old wood, 80 plus years and the changes to the resin and structure after that long is going to give
a very different guitar to kiln dry commercial Pine. In the end back then I had no source for really old pine
    so shelved it.

Interesting to hear it and get your views over Alder, Ash etc

  • This is 60 year old pine apparently.

The only other tele I have to compare it to is my ash cabronita but I'll do my best...

  • Rumour has it parts of David Dickinson are made out of 60 year old pine - with a deep mahogany stain obviously.

That's a nice piece of timber. I look forward to hearing what it sounds like
Tree recycler, and guitarist with  https://www.undercoversband.com/.

I've built a couple of Pinecasters. Even with cheap, 'modern' timber they sounded great. They did sound different acoustically and electrically to my other 'regular' Teles.

    Cool!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

On the wood thing, you can clearly see this example has good straight grain with lots of grain lines close together and few intrusions.

That is exactly what i would be looking for if I wanted to make a guitar from pine.   It doesn't really matter too much if it comes from old stock or new kiln dried stuff, you will find suitable and unsuitable peices from either.... but its definitely easier to find the qualities you want in old stock.  A tree needs to be able to grow very slowly to get those qualities, that is not something most of the modern pine growers can accomodate

It's got an almost semi-solid type sound to it if that makes sense?

The guitar is as light as a feather and this comes across in the tone, certainly compared to my Cabronita.

My pedalboard is in transition at the minute so I've only really played it clean, I'm liking it a lot but I wonder if the pickups are right for it...
