Unless you want to be Les Claypool or Victor Wooten the best approach is to learn as many songs as you can.

Whenever someone says "this song doesn't have fuzz bass on it", reply "it does now!"
You'll either get thrown out of the band or find the other musicians grow to like fuzz bass. They will stop listening to the actual notes you play and just bow before the awesomeness of the fuzz bass .
Worked for me!
Although it has to be said I have a somewhat idiosyncratic approach to playing other people's songs .
"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski
"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein
Any idea how many songs are on that page? I'd have thought 200-300. Would be interesting to see how many have bass parts available (& in PDF format) out there on the internet etc.

Next thing is - I need a bass...!
Oh, and before @ICBM says anything - I have the feelers out for a Ric 4001/3 separately...
They are less hassle.
