I think a bass would confuse the hell out of it
maybe that's why I liked it. The OP isn't looking for anything hifi
Is it really not easier to just use the guitar though?

I’ve been thinking for some time about quitting guitar, it’s become too frustrating and i’m not getting anywhere with it, while bass brings me a lot of pleasure and I feel like i’m improving. If I can move everything to bass it will make things a lot simpler. I can make it work at present using the upper register but it would be nice to have a more defined ‘treble’ sound.
all do octave up and all will track faultlessly!...
it's andertons but not laurel & hardy, these guys are ok.

What I've done on mine is not to fit it as original, or with a pull-switch like RIC do on the new 4003 (if you want to do that you need a special shallow-depth push-pull pot, by the way!), but to turn the tone control - which I never normally use on the bridge pickup - into a vintage-to-modern sweep - you can do that with the existing pot, as long as you want 'vintage' with it up and 'modern' with it down.
If the result isn't drastic enough you could try a smaller-value cap than the Rick one too.
