I spent a while looking through them all but went for the Axis Fuzz in the end:

This website is very helpful:

My poor eyesight is not.

(R12 is on the daughterboard and some folk recommend leaving R8 (and C7) out for a better sound).

I got all the components soldered on to the board without any real issues:
And temporarily put it in the unfinished enclosure for testing purposes:
Moment of truth, then...
...
...
Hurray!
All working correctly - next is to prepare and finish the enclosure. Still not sure on what the artwork will be but I'm sure it's gonna be awesome.
Side note:
If you're powering it with a 9v battery, make sure the battery is connected to the clip properly, or you might end up with lots of smoke and melted wires...
Whoops!
(After this I disconnected the battery clip and powered it off the mains - everything still worked )

That was the best I could do with the tools I had to hand. Improvements will be made for sure.

So I started by wet sanding the enclosure, starting at about 150 grit and going up to about 400, then giving it a once over with a bit of white spirit. At that point this is what I had:

A nice idea, but why spend actual money when you can just fold some cardboard and tape it up?
Magic.
For paining, I went for Rustoleum spray paints I found on Amazon,
First, a white primer to even everything out:
And then a couple of coats of a nice almost-white, to hand paint a design on top. It came out really well:
The next step is the handpainted design, which is being done by someone with actual talent (not me), then a clear coat, then assembly.

I muffed up the clear coating a bit by letting it run and then panicking and trying to wipe it off.. D'oh!
Still pretty happy with the results though, and it sounds great, really mental at the higher settings which is fun.
I'll post up a sound clip before the end of the year also
