Hello
I have a friend with a Fender MIM 5-string Jazz bass, 1998 - '99 or thereabouts, sunburst, excellent condition but no case -  which he now wants to sell.
I think this is worth around £350 - £450 but I'd welcome advice from anyone who knows more than I do!!

Would suggest about £350 for the Active DELUXE model and about £250 for the passive standard model.

Does seem a bit cheap to me though - especially as the current Mex passive versions are about £650

  • £250 for a MIM is cheap for a 4-string at least, unsure whether a 5 is less desirable? I'd pitch £300 for a quick sale and £350 if there's no rush.

A Fender dealership in my area had a pre-owned passive example displayed in the window for circa £450. Took ages to shift.

In which case, I made a mistake with my valuation, it's definitely only worth 50 quid ;-)

Those five stringers have always seemed undervalued on the secondhand market - even compared to their nearest four string equivalent models.

My recollection is that the pickups are nothing special. The five-in-line tuners probably do not help because the majority of American Fender five string basses get a 4+1 layout.
