    Also, I notice that the neck/Rhythm position pickup has a third conductor added. Am I correct to think that the additional white conductor is the ground for the pickup cover?

    These came straight out of my '52 reissue, so there is no problem hooking up to a standard Tele control plate.  The third wire you mention is the one that is usually clamped under the bridge plate to provide the ground.
