Dressing for dinner - a thing of the past?

What's Hot

We are staying in a lovely hotel for a few days. We always have dressed for dinner, not into a dress suit but a normal suit with tie etc. Nothing too fancy but respectful of the traditions and all that. Nobody apart from ourselves had made any effort! Tee shirts, leisure clothing, etc seems to be the way it is now. A pity IMHO. Anyone here agree?

I tend to avoid going to dinner in a hotel in the nude.

I tend to if I'm with someone, but on my own I have no issue with jeans, t shirt and a book!

I haven't worn a suit for dinner in a decade. It's completely unnecessary unless you're in Parliament or at an Oxbridge guest dinner or something.

I have no problem putting on a nicer shirt than I'd wear to watch TV, but if I'm paying, I'll wear what I want.

I would have dressed for dinner, you're not alone! It's a restaurant after all.

Putting on a jacket and tie to eat dinner seems utterly ridiculous to me and very much of the past. If it's a nice hotel then certain standards of effort should be respected but I think a shirt and some decent footwear is far enough.

If I was going out to restaurant yes, if it's a hotel I'm staying at, no. If I had to get changed to go and eat I'd probably order room service instead.

I don't often dress up, but it is usually in situations where dressing up is not required or desirable.

    Frankly, fuck the rules.
I didn't make them up and I don't have to follow them.

If I want to dress up I will, if I want to dress down then I will.

As long as what you are wearing is clean and won't put folk off their dinner then it's all good IMHO.
One thing I can't stand though is folk wearing flip-flops to a restaurant. Might be fine in some beach bar in Benidorm but not in a UK restaurant.

I don't usually do it much on holiday but this last holiday, our honeymoon, I went all out and felt amazing, I was defo the best dressed guy there and we got some cracking honeymoon photos out of it, too - which is important for me given the situation!

It depends on the situation. I practically live in hotels and restaurants. But more often or not I am on my own and have worn a suit all day long. So I dress down to go out. If on a date night with the wife then I might dress up if time allows. But that is more for the wife rather than some old custom.

I have to wear a suit and tie five days a week for work.  Outside work it's jeans all the time, unless I go somewhere with an actual dress code - which I don't think I ever have.  "Smart casual" would be a T shirt without a picture on the front.

Can't say I've 'dressed for dinner' in a long time - but I never hold my knife like a pencil - and wish storm and pestilence on those who do.

None of these phrases should be considered to be euphemisms btw....

Nope. I hate wearing suits. Uncomfortable and hot. I also don't feel the need to pretention I'm something I'm not.

    Same. I feel ultra-awkward in a suit.
just doesnt feel right to me.
