Currently listening to Deafheaven, a kind of happy/black metal/shoegaze band. Rather good. Their guitarists use a Les Paul and a Jazzmaster.
The guitarists in Deafheaven both use Dunable guitars now.

As others have said before, metal with it's many sub genres and so are in excellent health.  Probably not bands to reach masses to sell records and inspire kids to pick up guitars, but times have changed.
Ah yes. It was an old live video I was watching. Then I watched the rig rundown from PG.

    Nice guitars, especially this https://dunableguitars.com/?page_id=996
    They are nice.

I think if Kim Kardashian took up guitar we might see a rise in it's popularity.
Then I could sell all mine and take up the piccolo.
There's a gag about too much bottom end in there somewhere ;)
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

The only thing I'm remotely excited about in guitar development is the Evertune bridge.  I do need to go try one.  Besides that the only area I've seen growth in is metal guitar stuff, lots of customs, ERGs etc.

Otherwise there's just a pile up of traditional instruments that potentially could all outlast their original owners.

Pretty obvious statement but the manufactures should gear themselves up to the appropriate size of the market and adjust accordingly - Any peaks in sales should be treated as a bonus and not the norm

Guitar builders do not create any new craze in the 'record industry' - They can only live and thrive of the back of it - Hohner, Gretsch and Rickenbacker did not create The Beatles - Fender did not create Hendrix - So they should benefit from them accordingly

Equally guitar players do tend to be naturally defensive about changes in new models from established companies - If Fender had created the Jem, or Gibson the PRS Custom 24, would they have achieved the same success in the manner they have by been independent - My suspicion dictates that they wouldn't have and as such a nice balance exists in the market place as it is - And as I pointed out earlier, the overall guitar building has never been so good with just about something for everyone and various price points

It's also the kids of today. They have in their hand a highly complex device they cannot get their head out of. With modern software they can create tunes without the need to learn an instrument, and the guitar is actually quite a hard instrument to learn.
Then with youtube/snapchat, etc you don't need to actually perform live to your mates, just edit and show off.
I'd love to see figures on sales of other instruments.

I guess they are on the way out like Vinyl in the 90s and we all know how that turned out..

Yes, a lot of record companies folded. The analogy fits. :-)

Are the hipsters going to adopt the guitar as retro?

Yes. A *tiny* percentage of music is consumed on vinyl...... but because it's on the up from its nadir it's hailed as some kind of second coming

As long as they are organic and ethically farmed.

This - the only thing you can't buy is time. People lead busy lives and don't have the time to learn an instrument and if they do where would you play? There used to be around 10 pubs and clubs that hosted rock bands where I live. Every single one has gone - some of the pubs closed, most turn into gastro pubs. Music usually means a DJ.

My old guitar teacher used to work in schools - that's pretty much dried up as the kids no longer want to learn and pupil numbers overall are in decline.

Times they do change - kids spend too much time on iPhones and socialising online.

You lot are on a right downer.

If you all hang around here and grumble about guitars being less popular rather than playing them then they really will be!!
