honest? Theme choon to the movie Shaft by Isaac Hayes.
Thanks @EricTheWeary, I never heard of it.  I have very little interest in movies and none in modern movies.  Now Westerns, that is a different story.....
I think Shaft was about 1971 so might depend on how you define modern.

IIRC wan't the original track also used much more recently on the Shaft sequel film with Samuel L. Jackson in 2000?
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • Not sure, but I think Big Jim Sullivan may have had first solo on a pop record with the crying game. Can't remember who it was by though.

I dont know know if this was mentioned earlier but I love the story that British session guitarists would get paid double for using a wah as wah wah guitar counted as a second instrument, hence the proliferation of the effect on TV soundtracks in the seventies.

Tim Sult of Clutch uses it in a really interesting way in a lot of tracks, really quick. Unless it's a pedal operated vibe he's using?

Dave Murray uses wah a lot. His solo on Powerslave is all the better for it

Was listening to the Pebbles vol.2 compilation yesterday, and it has this amusing Vox wah-wah advert as one of the tracks.

U2 - The Fly. I love the way Edge uses it more as a flavour, shaping the sound, rather than just wacka wacka. Works great in the sort of delayed ambient sound of the track.

And another vote for Robbo and Skip Pitts :)

Either jelly 292 by Hendrix or the violin solo from sister Andrea by the mahavishnu orchestra. (About 2.50)

I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

  • The Marilyn Manson version of sweet dreams is pretty cool. Both the rhythm part and the John 5 solo.

Of course Jimi is the go to for Wah.

For a totally different type of use how about the guitar work throughout the Urban Hymns album by the verve? There's some great examples of swells and little inflictions where there's Wah but used subtly.

I really like the wah use in Sheik by ZZ Top from Tres Hombres. Really nice and subtle but cleverly used
