WTB Dogear P90

Just bought a Hamer Special Jr and the P90 is pretty good but it's such a great guitar, I'm wondering how good it would sound with an upgrade!

Anything out there for under £30?

How fussed are you about RF interference and hum?

I have a Seymour Duncan STK-P1B. This will fit into the stock Hamer XT pickup rout ... just. Fasten the pickup with the stock pickup cover on top and compressible foam padding beneath.

Not sure I understand why you'd need the foam? Are you saying to use the existing dogear cover? Does that mean the Seymour wouldn't be attached?

    How much are you after?

The Duncan STK-P1 pickups are double height, regular outline "soapbar" P90s. They will fit into the Hamer XT Junior pickup rout. It is necessary to reuse the Hamer plastic dogear cover to hold the Duncan pickup down against the bottom of the rout.

The foam rubber prevents the dome-headed screws that fasten the pickup baseplate to the lower coil bobbin from scratching the finish on the floor of the pickup rout.

It may be necessary to slightly enlarge the polepiece screw holes in the Hamer pickup cover to get the Duncan screws to fit.

This installation method is equally applicable for Gibson P-100 pickups.

    Thanks Alex

Would the Sea Smoke be the best for the classic LP Jr sound and do you do a Dogear version?

    Cheers

It is the best for that from my range. The smooth alnico 2 classic sound.
I do dogear at request for the same price.

Will have a Gibson dogear P90 available in a week or so, when Oilcity pickups make me a replacement for my Junior. The Gibson p90 is as new but wanted a bit more than £30.

Message me if your interested in the Gibson Pickup. I am having a Nightwatch alnico 2 dog ear P90 made for me. Ash the owner is winding it a little bit hotter than standard.

  • No offence but it's a cheap guitar so not worth a huge investment!

What are you selling for £17?

  • IMO, seventeen quid gets you something of similar excellence to the stock generic S.E. Asian pickup that is already in your guitar. It is often the lot of the pickup replacement guitar tech to be "gifted" the unwanted stock pickups that have just been replaced. The customer does this, thinking that they are doing the tech or shop a favour.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ...

I have a 2011 Hamer XT Junior. I stole the idea to upgrade it from the Hamer LP DC type guitars of the same series. (A few of these left the factory with OEM Duncan SH-4/SH-1 humbucker pairs. The improvement over in-house pickups was impossible to ignore.) After a few experiments, I settled on a Duncan Antiquity dogear P90. I realise that this must seem like a huge extravagance but the pickup was obtained pre-owned.

Spec-wise, the Duncan Antiquity and Alegree Sea Smoke seem to be in very similar territory. (You can see where this is leading, can't you?) The way that they push an overdriven valve amp is very similar. This suits a certain way of playing.

So, in the words of an old Tony Hancock skit, I suggest that you, "pay up and try to look big." :)

  • Good advice, fo sho!

I'm sure the Alegree pups sound excellent and are good value but current funds dictate that I should wait for a quality S/h unit!
