I became a fan of finer whiskies a few years ago. I like the smokey peaty Islay's such as Laphroaig every now and then but I think a good Talisker with it's peppery bite is my favourite.

I always taste fruity oranges with Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich tastes of pears to me.

i had a bit of a run on Bourbons for a while and like Woodford Reserve but the fiery burn takes some getting used to.

It's an expensive indulgence but what's your fave whisky?

If you like Laphroaig you should try Lagavulin and Ardbeg - both in the same ball park.

I tend to not like anything quite that bombastic - Dalwhinnie 15 and Oban are my current tipples :)

    I prefer the peaty styles.
Ardberg is like drinking a burning building.
Laphroaig is like drinking a burning hay barn.
Both excellent and better than their price would usually indicate.

The current fave in casa octatonic is The Balvenie Doublewood 17 year.

It is only expensive if you drink it every day.
I have one or two drams a week and no other alcohol.
    It is a cheap indulgence.

Yes, I don't often drink anything too smokey now. That said, I do like Caol Ila - particularly the unpeated variants. Current easy drinking favourite is Highland Park - bog standard 12 is fine but 18 is better. Normally drink whatever the malt of the month is though in the local!

I like the odd Dram ... this is my current stock. Rest of the bottles I've collected over the years are in storage...

  • I have a bottle of 25 year old Macalan from 1975, the year of my birth. It was a 25th birthday present and I have a wee dram from it every birthday... The bloody thing is nearly empty now.

Failing that for every day tipple I like the Belvenie Double Wood (Sherry cask) and for something a bit more special I like a nice Oban special reserve which I bought a couple of bottles of at the distillery. I do have something like 40 single malts on my whisky cupboard though.

Dalwhinnie 15 is a fine dram.

As much as it pains me as a Scot to say it the Japanese have developed some amazing whisky, friend of mine tricked me with some a while ago. Yiochi Single Malt is utterly superb if you can find it.

  • How do you drink them?

I went to a whisky tasting in a shop and couldn't make much out between them - which surprised me as I'm generally quite good at identifying flavour in coffees, wines, beers etc. The whisky was neat - so I mostly could taste alcohol burn and not much else.

Maybe I'm just not a fan?

I can tell a massive difference between malts. It helps if they are proper whiskey glasses

Yep. 21 year Old Pultney there too. They've stopped producing it so it's doubled in price since I bought it, £195 cheapest online at the mo. Beautiful stuff.

I like Jura's 'Superstition' as it's halfway between Arbelour and Laphroaig.

Once you've tasted Laphroaig, it's hard to go back to something like Glenmorangie or Glenfiddich, because you miss that peaty taste; however, Laphroaig is a bit much for me at times.

I do like Talisker Storm - Always buy that for my Father.
