Just fiddling with it in its unchanged state. The real culprit seems to be whatever is attached to the 'bias' switch - if that is switched to 1 or 2 there is no sound, If on 3, the thing works, but with noticeable drop-off if switched from Pentode to Triode.
Gonna let it cool down then head on in with a set of the Friskmeister's generous offerings...
Top marks to @Kittyfrisk for being kind enough to send me a set of valves for diagnostic twiddling, and saving me a bunch of hassle trying to find a tech.
