I got a new bridge pickup for my epi Les Paul, also had alnico pro II in it but wanted more mid range grunt. I got a custom wound unit with A4 magnets that once fitted I actually did not like very much, it just did not seem balanced enough. I then did something I had been meaning to do for a long time on all my guitars and adjusted the pole pieces properly for even string output (measurable) rather than just following the fret board radius rule which is actually silly, it saved that pickup and as it now sounds flipping great.
