I kind of like the Moderne headstock, in a perverse sort of way, but all those string guides are ridiculous.  The V headstock is probably a sensible choice!

there have been red ones before but they always seem to go with gold hardware.   I find gold hardware more offensive than the moderne design itself

Visually, I do like the LH headstock most, but the need for string guides would be a total pain. The RH shape is interesting also, and I like that if it can be made to work, although I agree the V headstock might be the sensible option. Liking the proposed finish and chrome hardware.

I find it funny you guys are using the word "sensible" to discuss a Moderne build  

I do have a spare set of steinberger tuners so did consider doing this version of the headstock which gibson used on the reverse explorer

but honestly, I think the V headstock is the only real option out of the ones associated with the modern design.  I did also consider an explorer style one, but the V worked best with the wood available... anything else would have involved adding wings to give extra width.  not an issue, but why bother if I didn't need to

I should say this neck was made by @gspbasses and very nice it is too.  I would certainly consider using more part made necks of this quality to help speed me up... although i still like making them from scratch occasionally

Actually, I think that headstock looks cool as erm... something very cool, love that - are you sure you don't want to use those steinburger machines? It would be totally in keeping with the style of the guitar. Re the use of the word sensible, I think it's in a relative sense. For me though, the Moderne design is very pretty, sensible or not - that must be part of the appeal of building one?

@wezv he knows how to make a neck, doesn't he? My strat neck is utterly wonderful. The fret work on it really is great, they're fairly narrow frets but there are no dips of high spots anywhere. It really makes you realise the small differences that add up.

i dunno, its kinda a love/hate thing.    I keep looking at it and thinking how i could tweak the design to make it better.

I guess mainly i love the mythology of the Moderne story, less so the actual design.  I don't think I have ever seen a version with the V headstock other than in that gibson picture above.

I also have a thing for the corvus and have drawn up a few plans in the past for headless variants on it

I do remember the corvus - different kind of thing, but yes, a headless version could work, can see where you're coming from there. I think the Moderne shape is very pretty just as it is - it does have a kind of retro-futuristic thing going on, but a nice simple shape also, and clean lines. Not at all ergonomic of course, must be horrible to use sitting down.

That blue stained quilt top is lovely - looks especially nice in the first pic.

yeah, we considered sanding back and going for a lighter stain - but i would much rather have a quilt that looks great in real life over one that looks great in photos.   it looks totally different from every angle and in different lighting conditions, just as it should

I've found that black sanded back then stained again makes great quilt look great for photos, but a bit 2 dimensional in person, whereas straight up stained (like some PRS guitars) shimmer like made, and can look very plain from one angle and like the ocean from another. 

Much prefer that.

Black stain is generally a very heavy pigment and just blocks the pores completely - no light passes through.   I am not against staining and sanding back to help quilt pop, but it works much better with a darker version of your final colour instead of black.   that was the plan here, but we decided to stick with the dark blue as the final colour

of course, people can always post pics of a black stain and sand back finish that look great as proof we are wrong
