NGD - 335 with a twist...

What's Hot

NGD! Well – Friday was NGD.

Gibson ES 335 P90 model. I own a 339 but have always looked a bit silly playing it since I’m over 6 foot! A friend of mine had decided he was going to move this on as he was playing his Gibson ES 135 more recently. It’s worth noting he has original examples of an ES 345 and ES 330. Both player grade but seriously cool! He found he wasn’t playing them as much as he had this 335 so he made the decision to sell this and play the originals  ;)

It’s all original with Gibson fitted P90’s.

From what I can tell, these were a limited run in 2012 and don’t seem very common. I believe it may be a traditional pro or a twist on a traditional pro… Hopefully someone else here on the forum can educate me! The volumes are push pull pots and basically switch the pickups to being “underwound” or normal. Locking Grover tuners which I didn’t like at first (I’m a Kluson kinda guy) but I can’t deny how well they do their job after using them all weekend.

I had 3 different gigs with different bands on the weekend and took this as my main guitar to all the gigs. I’ve been extremely impressed! Seems very versatile and sounds perfect for my styles of music (Americana/Blues/Jazz e.t.c.).

Not me playing on that vid – great player and good example of the sounds on offer.

Yeah, it seems like they only like making 330's with P90's! I've done some digging on the internet and they don't seem common at all.

Yeah nice and I suppose an Angie Dickinson spec 335 is something I will have to treat myself too before I peg it...

Looks wonderful. A Luther Dickinson 335 would be a dream guitar for me and this would be a fine alternative.
Odd that they're so rare as so many people like the idea. Even if it's not part of the core lineup, I'm surprised that they've not done more runs of this model.

Yeah, I'm surprised there isn't more of these produced too! Although Gibson have had a habit of ignoring what the customers want in recent years (to some extent anyway!).

I've e mailed them to ask for more details. Will report back if I hear anything of use!

Wow! Shame we're not geographically closer - would have been good to compare and contrast!

  • Nice looking guitar :) I've never had a guitar with P90s, I appreciate (sometimes) the tone these pickups can get you, but there's a reason why most Gibsons have humbuckers, and the clue is in the name of the pickup. Do you get any hum problems from the P90s?
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

It's my first guitar with P90's. I do love a good humbucker but they can get quite muddy at times. I find the P90's give back some of that clarity.

I'm usually a Tele player. I have humbuckers covered in an R7 so the from a Gibson point of view, I've got a different bases covered.

They do make a bit of noise but nowhere near a strat or tele in my experience. As a blueser/rocker - I reckon you could be converted to being a p90's kinda guy, Pip!

If its a gloss top and satin back and sides version, they are Sprint Run versions done for a Guitar Centre order, that they cancelled. I sold the whole batch thru a retailer I worked for at the time. There were a few different finishes in the the run. Sunburst, cherry, ebony and perhaps brown ?

I believe it could be. Awaiting Gibson confirming that...

Dare I ask what the RRP was?

They were really keenly priced, from memory they started at £1599 and dropped to £1399 to clear the brown ones.......
