Modern Player Thinline Telecaster - opinions?

What's Hot
I've only ever owned solid body guitars, and only ever with either humbuckers or normal single coils. I'm curious to try something that's got P90s. Also curious to try something hollow/semi-hollow.

Looking around I reckon I can get one of the modern player thinline teles for about £300, which is the maximum I'd be willing to spend on what is essentially a bit of an experiment to see whether I like it. Semi-hollow mahogany body with P90s, seems to tick all the boxes for my little experiment!

Any members owned one or played one? Any good?

I initially was taken by the idea of the Jim Adkins model with the seymour duncans, but they're out of my budget. Is the MP Thinline just a poor man's version of the same kinda thing?

Also, any other suggestions of something similarly cheap, hollow and with P90s?  :)

    Epi blueshawk?

Interesting. I had thought of that, but I think I remember seeing something on here the other week about them, linking to an Anderton's video where they didn't exactly blown away by it. I'd definitely consider it though, if I can find one locally to have a blast on. :)

Not played a Fender Thinline, but have played a Squier Thinline, and I own a G&L 'Tele' Thinline. Both have a slightly 'nasal' tone which is usual for Thinline type instruments. Neither were fitted with P90s but I can see that they should work well on that type of guitar.

I'd expect the Jim Adkins to be somewhat different due to the set neck and the 'Gibson' control layout.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

I've often been tempted by these, they are essentially Chinese but with Fender branding, so Squiers in all but name.

Nothing wrong with that though, I've got a Squier Classic Vibe Tele and it's brilliant.

As well as the modern player the other thinline to look at would be the Squier Thinline Tele https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/14072911204532--squier-vintage-modified-72-tele-thinline-mn-natural?gclid=CjwKCAiAr_TQBRB5EiwAC_QCq_dsXC1IoRc0lP5EkLDcCcHx58b_DBvHFKV5Oh1pH0TDiTQoHqh3fBoCBycQAvD_BwE

I think someone was selling one in the classifieds not long ago.

The other modern player is the "Telestrat" one, which I've always thought looks cool.

I've played one of these - they are great fun, sound good and weigh bugger all.

Only problem was I couldn't get the deal I wanted on it...

Looks tasty, but Southampton is a bit of a trek for collection from Sunderland!  :o

I'm actually heading into my local guitar shop tomorrow for something unrelated, but he has a Casino for sale in there. Might have a nosey while I'm there. Being a short arse I'm not sure I could get to grips with the large body style, I'd probably look ridiculous!  =)

  • It depends how good as mentioned above, these are simply CV Squiers. I’m in absolutely no way made of money but I’ve done my years of buying and continually upgrading cheaper guitars and that is what you would have to do here to make them anything average.

ive played thinlines all the way up the Fender range and if I was blindfolded I would never be able to tell you if it was a Thinline or not and seeing as they are only follow on one side they don’t have any resonance when unplugged either.

it might be a cheap fun mess around for home use but the last time I did that on something I just fancied it lasted a month before I sold it

The MP with P90s is a fine little guitar. Like folks have said, very closely related to the Squier CV Teles, which is no bad thing at all in my book. Once you get past the plastic fantastic finish, they play well and sound good. Really all the guitar you could ever need

Whether it would be all the guitar you want, is a totally personal thing.

  • The Blueshawk is a very nice guitar. Properly hollow unlike the Tele, where you don't really notice.

I tried the Thinline MP a while ago in the local shop, really liked it.  Build seemed fine, finish was okay, played well etc..  Was thinking seriously about buying it.  But, the attitude of the salesman really annoyed me and I couldn't stand being in the shop any longer so just left it.  They were under £300 then, but now they've gone up in price I've not thought about getting one.

On a separate occasion I have also tried the Jim Adkins and I much preferred it.  It's quite different to the MP, the scale length is 24.75" and it's made from ash.  It kinda felt like a cross between a LP and a Tele.

Of the two, I still occasionally keep my eye open for a JA, but not bothered about the MP at all

The JA has a set neck and tune-o-matic bridge too, so it will feel more pitched back and less straight than your average Fender.
