Polishing Nitro Finish Guitar

What's Hot
I need some new polish so I'm wondering what the men on here recommend for a nitro finish?

are you looking at just wiping of fresh finger marks on a fairly new and clean finish - Or trying to clean up old dirty stubborn sweat stains

I read about this but where in the uk do you get it?

Fresh finger marks on a brand new guitar.

I also want to to clean the fretboard- what do you think about those gorgomyte cloths?

never used a gorgomyte cloth so can't help

Lemon oil on a rosewood fingerboard  depends how much you play and sweat it acquires, but every 3/4 months should be enough - Wipe on, then rub/clean then wipe off, then leave a fresh 2nd coat to 'soak in' - after 2/3 mins wipe off any excess oil as probably not required - Don't flood it as it only nears a skim covering

For fresh fingermarks, use a clean micro fibre cloth - touch of spray, little is better as you can re-apply - to much and you'll be cleaning off smear marks for ages - I use Planet Wave Shine for finger marks, but any Martin, Gibson, Fender polish should be fine for such fresh marks - Stubborn marks, then use Plane Wave restore or even Maguires car polish

I use a silicon free beeswax furniture polish from Tesco, guitar-branded stuff is a ripoff IMO.

  • Thanks, guys.

I'm still interested to see if anyone has any experience with gorgomyte.

do people actually clean guitars?  from my experience of buying second hand it certainly doesn't seem so.

I've not used it but just checked some web info - I'd look forward to hearing other comments from any FB techs or users that have tried it - However frets are metal and fingerboards are wood - as such I'd have thought 2 different substances/materials ( or whatever) are required to clean them as required

Any guitars I sell are spotless, I always give my guitars a good cleaning before selling.

    Thanks, guys.

I'm gonna order a pack of it, it seems a lot of top guitar techs use it....at least according to the website.  From reading about it, it reminded me of a jeweler's polishing cloth, but only you can use it on wood also.  Apparently it conditions your fretboard too, but I don't know......

I use this stuff which is supposed to be the same as Gorgomyte but far cheaper. They're only about a pound or two each. Ebay or Amazon.

When you use it, it's like being transported back to the fifties.

I must admit... I imported mine from Elderly

It really IS good, though... and you actually only need the cleaner. But I'd look at it more as a restorative product for older guitars than a fingerprint remover for a new guitar.
