Oh the simple joys of a Telecaster into a straight valve amp!

Sometimes its nice to keep it simple. Playing in a covers band I need a range of different amp tones and some effects, so for gigging/band practice I use my Vox Tonelabs.

But when I'm at home, whenever I get the chance, I'll use my valve amps. And of all my guitars the one that really shines through a valve amp is my 1988 Fender Telecaster - either through my Laney VC30-210, DSL401 or Laney Cub 12R.  The problem with the VC30 is volume and its only when the family are out I can crank it a bit. But the Cub is more practical at home and having listened to the incredible Mr Greg Koch demo his new signature amp with his Tele, it got me into Telecaster mode again.  Been playing it for a couple of hours today, with a big smile on my face - no pedals, just straight into the Cub....luverly, especially with the neck pick-up!
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • Agree, it makes me concentrate on my playing rather than messing around with footswitches and effects.

Yes, it's much better than playing into a gay valve amp.

Actually, my amps go both ways - I can play AC/DC through any of them!

I thought all valves were straight? Surely they wouldn't work if crooked or curved?

It’s such an honest, ballsy sound. My Tele straight into a 2204 is bloody awesome.

If a Tweed and a Blackface are the two Nirvanas for Fender tone, does that make the Brownface a gender neutral amp?

    Couldn't agree more.

Considering the amount of money I have spent on boutique amps and the latest hand wound masterpiece, On Thursday we played the Borderline in London and I needed an easy to carry grab and go backline so I used this...

with just a quality lead into this....

....with a 1x12 cab and it sounded F*UCKING GLORIOUS!!

As I've said in another thread the best tone I've ever heard in person was a tele straight into a JCM800. Such a pure and powerful rock tone. Always had gas for one since - the telemaster I built didn't quite deliver tbh, maybe I just had the wrong pickup in it.

  • So so glad I've come back to the Tele camp. Straight into a BF Fender amp, simple and fucking lovely. Didn't post a NGD thread for it, but here's the new one:
