Any of yous watching Derry Girls?

What's Hot
Just interested to know what non-Northern Irish people think of Derry Girls?

I think it's hilarious and I've really enjoyed it, even though I didn't think it would be any good.  It's so accurate and reminds me of growing up.

Yeah... I was taught by Nuns in my Primary School...I thought it was a documentary..I am enjoying it though, despite the flashbacks  :)

  • I’ve been enjoying it, although definitely moments when I could use subtitles.

I haven't seen the last one yet but it's been good so far.

  • It's a canny watch, but nowt groundbreaking. My lass went to an all girls Catholic school and was taught by nuns and thinks it's hysterical. Apparently her school days in India were quite similar.

  • Best thing since Toast of London.. absolutely loving it. Love the ribbing the English lad has to put up with.

Mostly good, although the joke about cable tying the gym teacher to the monkey bars then joyriding him is in exceptionally poor taste given the #metoo/presidents club fall out. If the Inbetweeners had joked about tying up their PE teacher then raping her it would have been a national outrage. But a woman wrote it so it's ok...

I think it's pretty good. I've Irish family so I get some of the references. Otherwise, it's good to have a sitcom that's trying to be funny.

  • I think its awful....the punchlines are essentially someone saying a rude word in a derry accent....

  • I accidentally caught ten minutes of it the other night.

Ten minutes is how long it took me to find the remote.

That's ten minutes I'll never get back.

    Tripe

I just watched ten minutes and didn’t crack a smile, never mind laugh.  Either it’s thick with subtle regional humour I’m missing or it’s just not funny.

Strangely, I recall posting a Welsh sitcom years back and it was universally rejected on here as also being unfunny.  Maybe it’s just that we enjoy hearing jokes - even if they’re old and crap - in our own regional dialect.

Here’s some clips of Welsh sitcoms.  Does anyone find either of these funny ?

I have 'tried too' but it is just too aggressive and angular. The lead girl acts like she is 35 and may even be so... she has a MASSEEEEVE double chin for 15.....

The actresses are all late 20s early 30s.  They do look a little too old for the roles to be fair.

  • My eldest son said I’m watching it as a substitute for the late lamented Raised by Wolves. Definitely some similarities although Derry Girls isn’t as smart/ funny ( YMMV etc).
With both I quite like that they are set in bits of the U.K. that often don’t get a look in ( and in the case of Derry Girls set within the Troubles but not about them) and there’s a charm to that. Well, lots of things filmed in Northern Ireland these days, just not set there.
