Never thought I would miss my Boiler....

What's Hot
Boiler packed top 10 days ago...all German so bits are easy to mess with, went through the basics but due to time I decried to get the Viessmann engineer anyway.

Ah...the sensor has gone, or could be the ignitor, needs a good clean and service, that'll be £350 all in......err....no Ill take another look myself.

Bought sensors and replaced, £60....but....still dont work !...took Gas valve apart, after much testing deduced that the gas Valves not operating...New valve £180....found one on Ebay used, working, £40...

Can you send overnight...Ill pay the extra postage ?....Yes no problem, no need to pay extra....Mmmmm...didnt drive for 4 days....Hernes carriers....plus it turns out the kid used 3-4 day postal service....arrived today !

Just fitted it and now all toasty once again!...so about £100 all in though I should really get it serviced anyway.

But...I tell you what, its been flipping cold this last week, good job we have elec shower in the En Suite and coal fire in lounge.

Alos glad about heated seats in the car...

Your boiler is your friend ....look after it.

    Timing.

Just had our Baxi Bermuda serviced today. Bit of a classic apparently....the chap who did it has done it for at least 20 years for the previous house owner and it's never gone wrong.

    Baxi Bermuda here too...

We’ve lived in our house for 8 years now, and we’ve never even had it serviced once. God knows if the previous owners serviced it either... Just before Christmas it packed up, so we got the repair man round, thinking it might finally be time for a new one.

Turns out that it was just so dusty that the dust blocked a safety sensor. A quick clean and it’s back in full working order again. He said everything still looks brand new inside!

  • Don’t tell Atoyboy - you can guarantee vintage boilers will become ‘a thing’....

In our first house the boiler died, we bought a new one and 6 months later moved. It was a specific type of boiler and every so often you had to re-pressurise it by opening two valves until the dial went up.  We had reason to go back within the first year and were more than surprised to see ANOTHER boiler!?!?! He said that it lost pressure, he got a guy in who said it was dead and sold him another for several thousand pounds - what a rip off! I told him about the re-pressurising when we sold the house but he forgot. Some traders are total con men.

I can't bear heated seats in a car. Some luxuries I just don't want.

We just had problems with our Viessmann and they do a guaranteed fix for £264 inc VAT, so you should not have been quoted £350.

Mmm...whilst this is indeed a good point,  I believe incorrect.

I cant see how Im  breaking any law at all, look it up....Im not being paid for the work.

Yes its ambiguous, but illegal? I dont see that anywhere,...Competence is the word in play here....and I possess this, dont forget the registered gas guy that came out didnt even conclude that the valve was bust, how competent was he?

All that aside, as a spark, I can't disagree with your intention, we get this all the time in electric land and yes I will be very shortly getting my Gas man to check the boiler over and issue me a service report.

Dont do this at home kids...

That was including a service...problem would have been that fact the he hadn't diagnosed the faulty valve, so he would have changed what he thought, charge me £350...and still not fixed the problem a leaving a £180 valve still to buy and fit.

Suppose I could complain to Viessmann...to be fair its been a great bit of kit for a good 10 yrs.

The £264 included a service....I watched him do it. It was on a 100 series boiler though, yours might be a more expensive boiler?

As Spark240 says I'm fairly sure that's not correct - I needed a gas pipe moved about 10 years ago. I phoned one gas service and they insisted it was illegal for me to do myself. I then phoned the much larger gas service who'd put in a new boiler for me the year before and they said it's perfectly legal as long I wasn't doing it as a job of work.

Correct.....it’s frowned upon in the trade of course, and I wouldn’t touch it in someone elses home.

just trying to help you out if you have any issues in the future mate, make your own decision after reading this:  https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/media/1449/who-can-legally-work-on-a-gas-appliance-factsheet.pdf

I dont do gas anymore, just oil.. but like the sparks world I imagine, gas engineers seem to love grassing people up for doing their own work :dizzy:

The thing with non GasSafe registered people doing work: if it goes wrong you won’t gave a leg to stand on with your insurance (I’m assuming you don’t die in a fiery hell). The trades person carries that risk for you.

I’ve done gas work myself in the past, including putting in a whole CH system from scratch at my old house, but then I do know what I’m doing as I’d had training and used to have a Corgi ticket through my work. There are a lot of easy mistakes to make if you don’t know what you’re up to: for instance I’ve seen gas pipe joints made up with plumbers tape. It works for a while but eventually the gas attacks it and it breaks down, potentially causing leaks.

I completely appreciate what you are saying,,..Im certainly not advocating anyone does this sort of thing without the correct competence,..its just that you were suggesting I had broken the law,...which I haven't in my opinion.

The standard expectation of home insurers is a full check and test certificate by Gas Safe fitter every two years. Usually a service is carried out at the same time.

I regard myself as competent to work on gas systems as I used to be on the Corgi register and I used to do my own repairs but not any more. Same with electrics, I like to have all the safety certificates in hand now.
