    Another top tip:

    If you take a fall from 5 meters up whilst climbing, obviously break your ankle and also smash your climbing helmet into 16 pieces by hitting a rock with your head...do not, under any circumstances, hobble back to your car and drive back from the peak district via snake pass, screaming in pain every time you have to press the clutch with your very broken ankle.

    Not that anyone's ever done that.

    Except dick head me.
    To be fair though @Legionreturns, it would would have taken you a while to walk back instead.

    Get well soon @ThePrettyDamned ;

    that must have hurt. But you should be able to do all of it in 3rd gear.

    Not with 3 passengers and 4 climbing bags full of gear...

    Just my luck that nobody else has a driving licence

    A slip?

    Don't you mean you were battling a rampant wilderbeast and while finally slaying it with your grandfather's claymore it nicked you on the ankle and thats how you hurt yourself.

    Get well soon :)

    This is why you should always have a set of L plates. ;)

    I should have worn them while climbing that E2... It kicked my arse and spat me off like a complete noob. I've not been back since

    If you do go back, I'd suggest hiring something with an auto gearbox.

    Given that the ankle in question now has two rather large screws in it, that would cause a lot of mess if I broke it again, I think I'll pass!

    When I did it...

    What it looks like now...

    Exactly, you only need one functional lower limb to drive an auto

    @Legionreturns you were still pretty lucky, 5m fall and just a medial malleolus was probably relatively minor compared to the mess you could have been!

    If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, I wouldn't be here.

    This is why, when instructing, I show my clients a few bits of my old helmet (get your mind away from there!) when telling them why they should wear a bash hat for outdoor climbing.

    Also "medial malleolus" isn't what they told me at Huddersfield RI... They said "It's reet fookin' fooked" or something technical like that.

    @ThePrettyDamned ;

    Recover soon, hope you're ok

  • And yeah, @ThePrettyDamned , don't be like me. Listen to the advice of the professionals and your recovery will be quicker and more successful. Definitely *don't* go climbing again with a cast on. Apparently that's bad.

    All the best matey

  • Okay, x rays showed nothing, emergency trauma nurse couldn't figure it out, doctor couldn't figure it out.. .

    Consultant figured it out :) it's a series of injuries, starting at my calf muscle, then a tendon going down the to my foot, some ligaments and another set of muscles in the foot  all that are required to flex my toes.

    No breaks, but an interesting and quite nasty sprain! The pain is pretty unbearable at the moment, but I have crutches and am home. They warned tomorrow and Tuesday it would probably be worse, but I need to weight bear where I can and keep up the pain meds.

    Wonderful service from the hospital - absolutely bowled over by the level of care and professionalism. Especially as it would have been easier to say, "no break, probably bruised, off you go".

    Oof. Based on Lady BMcH's experience of putting out both ankles at once, I can only suggest getting into the physio as early as possible.

    Best of luck.
