The only negative experience I've had wearing earplugs was sitting down to watch at a local jam night with a lovely pint of bitter.  And a packet of dry roasted peanuts... not good eating crunchy stuff with them in!

    Interesting read.

I have never thought I'd even consider ear plugs but last week I went watching Stiff Little Fingers and The Ruts at Manchester Ritz (brilliant gig!) and came out with something I've never experienced before... it sounded like I was under water everything was really muffled. It took 2 days to clear properly and tinnitus still seems to be worse than usual. Frightened me a bit as I quite like my hearing: )

I will invest in ear plugs for future gigs!

You've had your warning. Do it without delay! (wis awarded in anticipation of a wise move)

I've had ACS moulded plugs for ages now - they're great. Sadly I didn't get them in time to avoid hearing loss and tinnitus...my cautionary tale here:

A very cautionary tale, thanks for sharing. After one gig I attended early last year I awoke to find I still had high pitched ringing in my right ear. A year on and it is still the same. I did buy some Alpine Musicsafe earplugs which have varying filters however after reading this post I should really get my arse in gear and get something better!

It's amazing how different these look...me, my drummer and my singer all have the same style and the moulds are vastly different.

Anyone fancy as "show us your plugs" thread ;-)

I think the Alpine ones are ok for keeping you protected, but since I got customs I now actually prefer the sound with them in - everything feels really nicely balanced, and they're comfortable enough to keep in for hours on end.

I'm waiting for my ACS plugs to arrive.  First set of impressions went missing, had a second set done and sent off.  Plugs should have arrived maybe yesterday or today - looks like they're swamped and are saying another week probably.

One good thing to come of this is that I had a good chat with the chap taking the impressions - hearing specialist in the local opticians.  Asked what I did for a living, talked about audio, studio design, speakers etc. etc. and gave my a free hearing test while I was there.  I was worried my hearing was nowhere near what it was due to gigs, rehearsals etc. but turns out it's still fine for my age and in the "Normal Hearing" part of the graph. I said I thought I'd left it too late to get plugs and he said "it's never too late to start looking after your ears" which is a good statement for us all I think.

I think I went past the earplugs stage a while back, and I’m well into the needing hearing aids stage, now..  :/
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Custom moduled ones from ACS. Mine are the older ER range but look at the Pro range. About £130 ish last time I looked but your hearing is worth protecting.
This. Will be the best £130 you spend. Pretty much saved my career as a musician more than once, I don’t go to gigs (playing or watching) or nights out where there might be loud music without them. I’m on my 3rd set since buying my first pair 19 years ago.

**edit** I see I jumped in with this comment before reading the whole thread. Good work OP, may you live to hear yourself rock for many years! ;)
