I am becoming a serious soul nerd these days and my favourite indulgence atm are Snarky Puppy. If you've not heard them, take a listen:
Thanks for the heads up on these @matt1973. Really good stuff..I'm going to have to investigate these further :D

This sort of thing (Eef is a lot better than me of course)
Ah Eef Albers .. I have a couple of his records from the 1970s. Not many people have heard of him - most of his stuff is now out of print.

    Now for some Jimmy Herring..

His tone and style are just awesome. Check out the solo at 2:14.

Yes, he's more than good, I've seen it before, it's definably "good".

Thanks for those videos @Fretwired. The McLaughlin concert was great, really enjoyed it.
I saw him many years ago in Cambridge when he was playing an acoustic set with Jeff Berlin and Trilock Gurtu and it was just sublime.

On the old MR forum I bought some CDs and because the seller (can't remember who) was late sending them out, he bunged in a couple of freebies. One of them was Col Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. Hadn't actually played it till the other day, I'd stuck it on the shelf thinking it was a C&W type thing, but it's a really good funky fusion thing with Jimmy Herring as part of the band. He's excellent; Bruce Hampton is no slouch either.

  • I only came here to make sure the MASH part of the title was covered. I love MASH.

Not strictly part of the thread... but that was a truly great TV series (without the laugh track)

  • Yeah, sorry to de-rail the thread! Couldn't resist. Will keep my eyes out here though, there's some great suggestions!

Now for one of my all time favourite guitar fusion tracks 'High and Mighty". The sublime John Scofield (for the 2nd time in this thread).
His note selection is just perfect:

And not forgetting the mash-up element let's have some classic Acid Jazz from the wonderful Carleen Anderson
(Which just happens to be great track for some serious guitar jammin to)

George Benson, he plays with such a groove, soul, superb technique and real enjoyment. It's always such a pleasure to hear him play guitar.

Jeez, I'd forgotten just how damn good old George was/is. Under all the recent smoothness I'd lost track of his real skills  :D

Here's a some nice early footage of the Pat Metheny Group from 1977. Such a classic line up with the excellent Mark Egan on bass. This is before the release of American Garage which really cemented the groups fame..
