Lots of difference between flanger and phaser. Flanger is cold and whooshy. Phaser is warm and throbby.

More familar comparison would be that flanger is 80s and phaser is 70s.

It’s the whooshy sound I’m more interested in so hadn’t really considered a Phaser. I am only really looking to do anything here though if I can replace the chorus too and reduce the number of pedals.

Phaser moves from side to side, flanger moves back and forth and tremolo moves up and down. Well, in my head.

Phaser is reggae and punk, Flanger is more rock, Chorus is more new wave. Or not.

That’s a pretty good way to put it, I reckon. :)

The example of Flanging sounds just like my Phaser pedal...

Seems in a Pedal FX, most of the difference is in the decal...!

    Nah.

They're really quite different. Anyone who can't tell the difference between an MXR Phase 90 (phaser) and an MXR M117 (flanger) is either fibbing or cloth-eared. :)

I snagged myself a TC Vortex (full size one) on Monday for £45 on eBay and it arrived today. So far tonight I've had a pretty good time slaughtering some 80s riffs. It has a lot of settings and the Toneprint option, so it's going to take some dialling in, but I think I got myself close to where I want it to be.

No volume drop or tone wrecking, so it is definitely an upgrade from the Donner. I still want the EVH one, but I will bide my time and see if one comes up on a deal or something in the future.

Pretty chuffed with the TC one though!

The Maxon FL-9 Flanger (also an Ibanez version) can do good faux chorus and phaser sounds.
