You're absolutely right.  No wonder they didn't bother putting any strings on it.

it really doesn't,  the fret spacing gets wider when you  increase the scale length.  Proportionally, the space left over is the same   The gap between 24th and bridge does not grow by much at all... it will always be 1/4 of the scale length

easy to do the maths. 
On a 25.5" scale the 24th fret it at 19.125" from the nut, leaving 6.375" to the bridge
On a 27.5" scale the 24th fret it at 20.625" from the nut, leaving 6.875" to the bridge

you would only create 1/2" space for pickups by increasing the scale length by 2"
