NFGD Cimar - Astra

What's Hot
New Free Guitar Day!

It's a Late 70's Cimar - Astra

The pics make it look in a lot better condition than it really is.

I am pretty sure that it was left in a garage for a number of years, I have spent a long time cleaning it up. It was covered in mould and dirt and it had become somewhat of a graveyard for all types of creepy insect things including some weird wormy things (dead thankfully)!

Anyway gave it a good clean and it came up pretty nice, although the laquer is pretty much cracked everywhere and it has loads of marks and dings. Amazingly the neck was perfectly straight and the only thing missing was the nut for the toggle switch so I just bought a new one. I put new strings on and cleaned the electronics, I wasn't expecting much but to my surprise everything actually worked perfectly, the switch the pickups everything!

It's actually a really nice guitar I really like it, I can see we people rate the Cimar guitars now.

"although the laquer is pretty much cracked everywhere"....

... normally, you would have to pay extra for that!

I was going to say, why is it that damage on an older guitar is bad, but being chucked in a freezer and scored with a razor blade is a good thing?!

Seriously though, that's a pretty cool looking thing, nice save.

4+2 headstock - don't remember seeing many of those back in the 70s. And a nicely different body shape too.  Definitely a good save.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • Yeah I have set it up for a band practice tomorrow so I am going to trial it, my only concern is no locking tuners! I am usually pretty anal about that!

That looks like a cool Japanese guitar. Isn't there some connection between the Cimar and Ibanez brands? My only recollection of them from the '70s was as a copy brand. Never seen an original design before.

Not bad at all for free. 4+2 headstock, 24 frets - I didn't know such things existed in the 70s.

Yeah the Cimar guitars were made by Ibanez I believe.

    Nice.
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Lol I am a confused person! I do enjoy "early music" and all things old but I also like new things like Metal for which I enjoy lockable love levers :-)
