hi,
I'm looking for a delay with the cleanest and clearest repeats.
What can anyone recommend?
All opinions welcome.

Most if not all digital delays do nice clean repeats.
You have a lot of choice
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

There is no 'best' as such but there are loads of nice delays if you have the funds.

    Strymon Timeline is pretty excellent.
    Same with Eventide Timefactor.

Pretty much everything available now sounds 'good' or better.
Beyond that it comes down to personal preference and feature set.
Do you need presets? Or Midi?
    Do jouw ant a looper?
Do you want something simple, or come comprehensive.

    Don't need midi or looper.
    Presets would be advantageous

TC Flashback Triple delay is worth checking out as you can have more than one delay engine on at the same time. Pristine repeats. If you have more cash then the Timeline is also good.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

I've owned quite a few Delays and generally prefer Tape Echo and Bucket Brigade style.

But I always have a digital as well for a bit of variety

At the lower end I like the Boss DD3 had one for around 6 years.

Medium I like the Strymon Dig as I like the crystal clean 24 bit and the 80s influenced adm and 12 bit so it works for me without having to change a pedal.

Higher end id go H9 as it's so flexible and has a lot of interesting features and sounds.

  • Hi @m1ck1970 ;, to my knowledge, you've tried some of the best...so I pose back to you, what is it about those that you don't like?

The pedals I'd usually recommend are TC Nova, Strymon DIG, Free The Tone Flight Time, Providence Chrono Delay. But I think you may have used most of them.

Currently, I use plugins and the Kemper for delay duties and am blown away on a daily basis by both. Both are incredibly clean, clear and pure - as well as versatile/flexible.

Also, to each their own, but of all the delays I've used for digital pristine style, the Timeline doesn't even get close. I'm sorry to be that guy.

Good luck, mate. Here if you need any help with anything, drop me a PM!

No budget (within reason) but needs to be pedal format.

DD-20, lots of variety including tone control for the repeats, and four presets, about 120ish used.

I have seen the Source Audio Nemesis go for £180 used. That is a ridiculous bargain for a stellar digital delay, smallish, with presets, highly configurable and fantastic sounding

Boss dd500 is excellent, can be picked up at a reasonable price too. Flashback isn’t a patch on it.  Though, TonePrint feature is fun.

Boss DD-7 is my favourite out of them all.  DD-3 is great too, but the DD-7 is a few more options which I like.  DD-500 has absolutely loads of options and settings if you want to get really detailed with your tweaking.

I just use a couple of DD3’s in the loop; they’re modded, so as well as the standard mode they have two ‘analog modes’ by which the repeats have the treble progressively rolled off so they don’t sound as pristine and unnatural as digital delays can. I use them to switch between fast and slow delays, or together if I need more ambient wash. It’s a very simple system and sounds gorgeous.

The ‘cleanest’, in my experience, are:

    1.) Flight Time

    2.) DIG

Don't forget to consider the Empress VMSD.

Oh, and if you want the best; the Cornish TES :)

This is something I've found too and it took me ages to discover it:  two simple delays are more versatile than one fancy delay.
