2011 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul R5 'Refin'

This guitar is from a run of Gibson's 'Year of Innovation' Hot Mod series of guitars and replicates a refinished '55 Gold Top.

Apologies for the history lesson but it is relevant and quite interesting to some of us guitar geeks.....

When the original 'burst' came out in '58 with humbuckers and a new bridge a lot of black and gold Les Paul owners felt that their guitars were too 'plain' so they sent them back to the Gibson factory and had them modified to the same spec as the new model (More owners did this much later on also when LP's became 'popular' again when JImmy Page and others started using them for rock!). There were some that had the full treatment including new bridge, humbuckers and of course the gold or black paint stripped off and refinished as a burst. Some kept the original P90's or retained the old style bridge but most went for the full Monty conversion.

Obviously when they started making guitars with the burst finish the top was very important and the seam was always in the centre of the guitar and the wood used matched on both sides. When making guitars before this time it did not matter about matching the two halves so they used any maple cap that was available as it was not visible due to being black or gold.

So what you have here is a Gibson factory replica of a 1955 Les Paul Gold Top, stripped down and refinished in a Cherry Sunburst by Gibson (legend has it that you can still see a lustre of the gold underneath the finish where it seeped into to top). The off-centre seam divides a part flame and part plain top and it sports a wonderful set of P90's and a unique 1955 neck that has 'sloping shoulders'

Cash is king but will look at trades / part ex for Gibson / Fender custom Shop or vintage models. May even add more of may guitars to look at a more expensive vintage guitar?

Based in Washington near Newcastle but happy to meet half way or meet when I'm anywhere in between Birmingham and Scotland (occasionally London)on business
