    Been watching this thread.
Have to blurt out that Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band's album Landmarks is the best jazz record I've heard of the last ten years, do check it out.

I like various types of jazz. I got into John Coltrane quite a bit, around 10 years ago. I can appreciate his more out-there stuff, but it's no good for having on in the background.

My thoughts exactly, speaking as the OP. But cool that there are more than a few of us into jazz. @jdgm - you're preaching to the converted re Steve Khan - have been keen on his playing since the late 80s, and indeed I think I have that very album, bought ages ago. But a timely reminder, and a too often overlooked guitarist - still sounds fabulous - so cheers for that. :)

Charlie Byrd, still listen to a lot
Larry Coryell, not so much anymore
Martin Taylor - bought and loved all of it, now dislike the lack of expression caused by playing all the parts on one guitar, much prefer to have a bass player do the bass part, etc.

    the recently departed Ronny Jordan

Pat Metheny has always been my favourite

    away from guitar,
been listening to a lot of Diana Krall recently

    Really? Oh, sad!

Recently I've been listening to Frisell and Julian Lage a lot - there's a lot of stuff with Lage like masterclasses etc on YouTube that are fascinating. I love the opening to this:

Jim Hall, too - remarkable playing especially in his stuff with Jimmy Giuffre and the duets with Bill Evans.

I think it was @Fretwired who put me on to Michael Manring back on the old forum. This is phenomenal playing.

  • One jazz guitarist who I think sometimes gets overlooked is Grant Green ... check him out if you don't know him.  Did everything from classic bebop (great version of 'So What') and some great funky stuff too (Live at Club Mozambique').

Does this count as jazz?  I hear it that  they could play straight jazz, but largely withhold that in favour of structure.

Edinburgh band, love the tone the trombonist gets.    Nubiyan Twist - "Headhunter", since it doesn't display.
