Finally, something we can all be happy for. Especially this chap:

  • Loud noises can be stressful for people on the spectrum.

Its not an unreasonable request for student union events, which are supposed to try and be inclusive of the student population.

    I'm not disputing that.
It would be fairly odd to be in the room when it happened though.

  • Pretty much the ASL way of applause then.

Probably at first, because we are used to clapping.

I think it’s fine personally if I’m understanding the context of where it is being proposed.

It’d be a less reasonable expectation in other environments, eg at a live gig that would already be loud.

I expect some people are gearing up for a ‘the worlds gone mad, back in my day’ rant.

    To them I say

I'd like to see it happen at a Guns N Roses gig at Wembley.
End of Rocket Queen and the arena is silent except for the flapping of many gold bracelets.

The Students Union have been doing it for years ... excellent idea. People shouldn't feel excluded or put off by the arseholes who show off whooping and clapping loudly.  I hate clapping and whooping, especially in the theatre. I pay for a ticket .. why does the cast expect applause at the end .. they're getting paid. Jazz hands would be fine ... and on TV shows .. canned clapping .. why? Jazz hands would be better ... the government should step in and make clapping and whooping an offence.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

But they'll make sure to make it an offence after Theresa's speech tomorrow at the CPC. Actually that would be some immense trolling if the audience jazz hand her.

As for the actual story... I'm all in favour of it. I've seen how my partner's autistic son gets sometimes with applause and loud shouting. Even the bus home when it gets loaded with secondary school brats will get him anxious, and there are a few others in the same situation on that bus.

And I will say that not having to applaud for ages at the end of classical music concerts would be fantastic.

Welll, tbh out our twins graduation ceremonies I couldn’t care less, our kids were applauded and cheered for their hard wor and achievement, being aware of an issue doesn’t necessarily mean that a small proportion of a group should impinge on the greater celebration of the whole,

In what context is it being proposed? At gigs? Lectures? Presentations?

I don’t know much about autism but surely if you keep on accommodating and making allowances it’s not progress? It doesn’t help people overcome their problems and live a ‘normal’ functioning life?

I’m happy to be shot down as I’ve only done a basic awareness course through work.

But I can speak as a parent and I wouldn’t want the world to change for my kids. I’d want them to learn and adopt coping mechanisms.
