Its not an unreasonable request for student union events, which are supposed to try and be inclusive of the student population.
It would be fairly odd to be in the room when it happened though.

I think it’s fine personally if I’m understanding the context of where it is being proposed.
It’d be a less reasonable expectation in other environments, eg at a live gig that would already be loud.
I expect some people are gearing up for a ‘the worlds gone mad, back in my day’ rant.
To them I say
End of Rocket Queen and the arena is silent except for the flapping of many gold bracelets.

As for the actual story... I'm all in favour of it. I've seen how my partner's autistic son gets sometimes with applause and loud shouting. Even the bus home when it gets loaded with secondary school brats will get him anxious, and there are a few others in the same situation on that bus.
And I will say that not having to applaud for ages at the end of classical music concerts would be fantastic.
I don’t know much about autism but surely if you keep on accommodating and making allowances it’s not progress? It doesn’t help people overcome their problems and live a ‘normal’ functioning life?
I’m happy to be shot down as I’ve only done a basic awareness course through work.
But I can speak as a parent and I wouldn’t want the world to change for my kids. I’d want them to learn and adopt coping mechanisms.
