Further to previous thread (hints and tips appreciated), I pulled the trigger on a 32gb iPad 4 yesterday.  It felt weird (not in a good way) laying out that much cash on something that doesn't have strings on it, I have to say, but I have it now, so want to get the best out of it.

So - first question is how to I get it to 'share' the apps I already have on my iPhone, if that's possible at all?

After that what do you fellers recommend - in terms of free and paid for apps (I conveniently have a £25 iTunes card somewhere)?

Are there any neat cheats to downloading films and programmes on the free or cheap? I've already got BBC iPlayer on it but that's limited.

Any must-have gadgets/peripherals?

Fire away boys (and Myranda and Clare), fire away.

  • There's loads of guitar tuner apps which you might find useful. Hardwire one is free (IIRC) and TC one is good. Have one on my phone and iPad.

You can go back to the app store and anything you've already paid for you can download again onto the ipad. Some apps (Angry Birds) you have to pay separately for the ipad and iphone versions, but most these days you only pay once. If it has a little plus sign on the price tag in the store that means it's one of the cross-buy good ones. Even on the ones where the ipad version costs extra you can still download the iphone version and use that on the ipad.

A guitar interface of some shape, size and colour.

iRig is a perfectly good place to start, and cheap.

JamUp Pro is a great jamming/practising/recording app with loads of emulated amps/fx.

    Guitar Pro.

    Garageband (of course).

Amazon cloud player if you've bought any music, ever, from Amazon in any form at all.

The Kindle app is most useful for reading books n stuff.

Check what access you can get to your favourite papers/mags.

Figure & Launchpad (free, IIRC).  Launchkey (ditto).

Whatever app of choice for "work" stuff - QuickOffice Pro is what I use, but it's not cheap (by app standards)

    Goodreader.  Multi-functional, multi-useful.

Games.  There are a millions of them.

    Favourite games...

Plants Vs Zombies HD (#1 is much better than 2)
    Flight Control HD
    Drop7
    Ace Attorney
    Walking Dead; The Game
    Monkey Island SE
    World of Goo

    Music-wise I use the following for jamming/recording
    Jamup Pro
    Multitrack DAW
    Audiobus
    Soundcloud

And +1 for QuickOffice Pro HD. About £6 iirc but Dropbox integration works well and it's the best ipad office suite I've used. Not ideal for creating whole docs but good for light editing and reading on the move.

    Guitar interfaces:

Avoid the iRig - I bought one and found it too noisy. I'm currently using a Line 6 Sonic Port which works with Garage Band and the free Line 6 app which cames with 32 amps and effects, a jamming tool and thousands of presets ... http://uk.line6.com/sonicport/

Or look at the IK Multimedia iRig HD ... the Amplitube amps are more expensive but it has a Custom Shop in which you can buy specific amp models and effects. Amplitube has the beest amp and effects sims for the iPad. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irighd/?gclid=CLTQuIKmmLkCFcbLtAodzQQAeg

iTunes for music and film rental.

True Fire was some cheap decent guitar lessons

    Newstand for magazines

Re ebooks. You can get a load of classics for free when they're old enough.

And +1 for the Apogee Jam if you want to get the best from the guitar apps. It's a splendid little interface.

If you need anything for tabs, Songsterr is a great app. £7 is steep for an app, but I took the plunge as I also had an iTunes voucher balance remaining an took a gamble, has midi playing and can switch between different guitar parts and also bass and drum tabs.
