Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom

Idly browsing for white LP Customs as one does, I've come across a few geetars called LP 'Classic Custom'.  To my untutored eye they look just like LP Customs, down to the binding and the split diamond inlay and all the rest of it, but considerably less wonga.  Can the forum hive mind tell me what that's all about, what they're like, and whether it would be worth chopping one of my pitiful stable in against one?

Not played one and I'm not too familiar with these. They have a rosewood board not ebony I think, but the latest ones might be richlite, and have different classic 57 pups. I'm not sure if wood/construction is exactly the same as a full custom but I suspect not, and the fretboard inlays are trapezoid instead of rectangular. The spec has changed over the years so there might be variations depending on year.  

But I think it will still be a proper Les Paul, just a slightly different take with cost effective features.

Thanks: so presumably one saving is in the fretboard wood...  hmmm.

They were very very well received when they came out.. People over at the Gibson forum loved them... As you say, custom features but much cheaper.

I also think they are very nice..

I think they might of had roasted maple fingerboard?

I think earlier ones had richlite boards but I think the latest ones might now have rosewood? As I said, the spec has changed a few times.

You may be thinking of the Midtown Custom, which if you didn't mind the richlite were also nice..

I think I just got confused between baked maple that is a substitute for rosewood, and richlite that is the substitute for ebony. 

I once had a very interesting guitar with a baked maple board...  They for some reason make them look very light in the pictures, but the one I had and the ones I saw in the shops when they were using it were much darker... The other substitute they used was granadillo which was often lighter in colour.

It was a Firebird Non reverse with three tapped P90s and an out of phase switch... Was very cool but I never really bonded with it

I had one of these in wine red, was a nice guitar. Baked maple fretboard and no binding on the rear of the body helped keep the cost modest.
