Talk to me about cheap short scale guitars

  • Another Squier Bullet Mustang owner here.

    I did the "silly" thing and put £200 pickups in it, and then got it rewired and setup by @icbm

    Now obviously I'm biased but I think it's a very nice guitar now. And either John is a good liar or he thought it was pretty good too.

  • How about the G&L fallout?  https://glguitars.com/product/fallout-2/

    Should be able to wrangle some great rock tones with that humbucker, they don't seem to break the bank either  :)

    @bluenile - That says it's full 25.5" scale though?

    @UnclePsychosis looks great with those Oil City pickups in it. I don't think it's daft spending that amount on pickups - a good guitar is a good guitar regardless of price! I'm a serial fettler anyway so even if I spent a grand on a guitar I'd still probably faff about with pickups.

    -to be fair, Ash sold me the pickups at a huge discount which is how I justified it. Glad I did  though - they're great.

    These are really nice. The necks are too "modern" for me but the body shape is great and the one I tried was really lightweight.

    I also gig an unmodded (well, staytrem bridge) 66 mustang. It needs new frets but it's absolutley fine for gigging, floating vibrato and all.

    So I think the plan is to set up an alert for a Squier Mustang anywhere near me and try it out. If I like the way the shorter scale plays, I'll mod it. New pickups, electronics, nut and probably tuners.

    I'm also going to keep an eye on Durango Guitar Works. The Tele types look really good, and I don't think I'd need to mod that as much.

    Put a capo on the first fret of a "normal" scale guitar and tune it so that the "open strings" are E-E. You now have a "short scale" guitar to try out. :D

    Just seen this - I'm very tempted. Been looking for one of the Squier Vintage Modified Thinlines in 24.75" but they never come up used. Anyone tried these or know of a shop that stocks them? Looks cool in the blue finish.

    These hardly ever show up nowadays. Wanted one myself for a good while. As they're so scarce prices are rising as well so if you see one for cheap jump on it.

    The black one looks great! Any idea what the  neck profile is like on these?

    @JD50 ;
    Did you get the one in the middle off ebay last year? I was watching one just like it with the WRHB in the bridge?
