Basically what does a Jazzmaster bring to the party.
how about Marquee Moon,? imho the greatest record ever made
I believe a lot of the 'Jazzmaster'  is actually Tom V's Jaguar with lipstick pickups. But yeah, one of the top 5 albums ever made.

    I struggled when I had a jazzmaster.
It looked lovely, turquoise green metallic and mint guard. It did lend itself very well to lots of effects as the pickups where extremely defined you could still hear clearly all the notes over the effects, but. .... I don’t use effects all that often and I found the stick clean sound to be like a strat with more treble but none of the sustain and if I engaged the rhythm circuit it was too muffled.
Mine was a stock MIJ model though and I’m told those pickups were a weak point.
They play great though and are very comfy, mine was 7.25” radius

Mine had MIJ pickups in - they were awful, the combination of them with 1 meg pots made the bridge pickup bright enough to take the enamel off your teeth.

As I mentioned, I put Lollars in and swapped the pots for 250k, and it sounded lovely.

2.42 is when the solo starts.

Nels is the reason I keep returning to the Jazzmaster. Sublime.

And this particular performance was my introduction to Wilco and what a Jazzmaster is capable of:

Solo at 4:20 ish - before that he’s playing a mad old Hopf guitar.

  • It's a sort of pipe dream of mine to play the whole of the Marquee Moon LP onstage, just once. My old band used to do See No Evil so that's one ticked off :)

Bands that scream Jazzmaster tone to me - Swervedriver, The Raveonettes, and Doug the guitarist from Sharon Van Etten's band.

I played on mine for an hour or so late last night. I don't know what it is about that guitar but it makes me play completely differently and creatively. It would be perfect of not for the skinny frets. I've been toying with the idea of getting bigger frets on it.. .

    We share the same thought.
I'm having another one too: 24 frets, Wizard II neck.

  • Thurston Moore Solo stuff for a wonderful Jazzmaster sound.

They sound like nothing else. Love them. Physically they’re more comfortable to play than anything else to me too; the neck somehow feels longer and it really helps for the balance.

Brilliant. Love a bit of Thurston. And how low are those bottom strings tuned for to?!

  • Very versatile. They can do very nice cleans and very hot leads and fuzzy tones as shown by J mascis, Thurston moore, lee ranaldo ect

Clean with just a tiny bit of hair sounds best. Crowther Hotcake and a Jazzmaster is match made in heaven.

Heres me on (now) @RMJ s JM.
