But, I also used to cruelly line up snails across the road in front of my house. It was a quiet single lane. So the game would be to see which snails made it to safety, and which would get flattened!
Snails are not too bad...it’s still quite cruel, but if you’d have said hamsters then I’d be slightly concerned...

In the pre-BMX era, going “scrambling” on a customised shopper bike with a Sturmey Archer three-speed, and wishing I had a Grifter.

Crowding round in a mate’s front room to watch the Thriller video (him being possibly the first kid in Andover to have the untold luxury of a VCR. (Cue Neil from the Young Ones - “Oh wow, have we got a video?”)

Oh yeah, the thrill of anticipation when the latest Young Ones episode was about to start. Also the worry that my parents might step in and not let me watch it...

Cycling being a routine way of getting around that didn’t require a colour-matched lycra bodysuit, electrolyte hydration packs or the Strava app

Yes, got one here from 1968, together with the accompanying letter from the producer of Blue Peter. It says 'best wishes from Val, Peter  and John'.

Trainspotting.  Spending my summer holidays at the age of 8, on Selby station, having purchased a platform ticket for one penny, watching the East Coast Main Line expresses whizz through, and getting the engine numbers.

Steam engines in full flight - what a sight, sound, and smell.

All-night terrestrial TV that wasn't just the BBC news channel or roulette games - old films, random American cop shows, American Gladiators, Night Network and Noisy Mothers.

Building BMX tracks / ramps / quarter pipes and spending hours and hours on my Redline racing all my mates and pulling ridiculous jumps and tricks - with no helmet or pads!
    Show off
Indeed. To this day I'm still bitter that I couldn't afford a pair of Skyways for the BMX I built and had to settle for Aero Zytecs.
Took me 2 years to save for it, during which time I was riding an absolute piece of shit!!!

And I just found an action pic of the beast!

Seeing those Zytecs in a Google search just made me feel funny. Clearly guitar has taken the place of my Skyway lust.

Val, Peter, and John - the classic trio from my childhood (sorry Chris Trace, you were good too, but VPJ were the bomb)
