Agree with you on Joe - Surely Don Felder can join that list - Many tasty licks and not just solos on One of these Nights album + Hotel California

Steve Cropper deserves an honourable mention - maybe the ultimate guy who was 'just doing his job'

Ken Hancock from Half Man Half Biscuit.  Not many people can play guitar solos ironically and get away with it. Him and Zappa, obviously.

Brilliant player, under rated band though.
Sadly Ken is no longer playing in HMHB ☹️

    Good shout on Steve! Definitely!

Sometimes when I hear Felder though I think he might fall into the “underrated” category... sometimes. ;)

I know Joe was brought in to add 'rock' to The Eagles, but all those licks on New Kid in Town, One of those nights, Long Run etc are Don - Yeah maybe underrated - Good either way and well worth a listen - Glad I saw him with The Eagles and of course with Joe

All these discussions about Clapton, Hendrix and the like had me thinking:
What about players who are neither overrated nor underrated, but are rated 'just right.'

For example, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith out of Iron Maiden- they are pretty decent players but not generally revered.
Nor are they the subject of controversy or derision.

Or the chaps out of Judas Priest (I forgot their names) - I mean they can play a bit although they're clearly not in the league of your Malmsteens or your Vais. But then you probably wouldn't slag them off.

These are players who, I would say, are rated 'just right'

Are there any other guitarists who fit into this category?

I'd say Malmsteen and Vai are not in the league of Downing and Tipton.
They can widdle but neither has a back catalogue to match Priest.

Will Sergeant - not the most technically proficient, perhaps, but his playing probably wouldn't be half as good if he were...
If anything, I think he is probably underrated.

As I said earlier, the original post was a poor attempt at humour...it seems to have got out of hand.
On the plus side, there have a been a whole load of interesting players mentioned, many of whom I had not checked out before. So.. But....yeah.

    PS

And that is a very very good point. Sad Wings of Destiny...perfect album in every way. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Leo Nocentelli from The Meters and Barrie Cadogan, two players that just have “it”
Are you me in disguise ...or am I schizophrenic?  :o
Not much of the gear, even less idea.

That was an attempt at a joke .... I kinda was hinting the Lil' Wayne is exactly as over/under rated as he should be

I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.
