Not so.  The Line 6 one works, and there's a Mission one that works - because they were built with a TR connection and a 10K pot. TRS connected pedals can work, but not always properly, depending on the pedal internals. It's a minefield if you go off piste. 

I've got the Line 6 one.

Would any mono pedals work? There is a cheap Bespeco one on eBay.

It's got to be a tip-ring connection (so, mono...) and the pot must be a 10KOhm linear (not log) pot. If the pot has a different value the pedal may misbehave - not give you the full range of 0-127 values when it sweeps from full-off to full-on, for instance.  Yet the HX FX forums are full of people saying their TRS pedal works fine, so who really knows or who can you trust...

Because they can, I think. But, it just works, so in the long run I felt it was easier and cheaper just to go with their pedal and enjoy the HX FX.
