Try a high end early 80's Tokai Breezysound or Springysound.
They are renowned for being better than anything coming out of USA at the time and compareable to Fender Custom shop guitars.
In the early 80's Fender themselves took note & one of the main reasons they opened Fender Japan in 1982 was because of companys like tokai kicking Fender's ass at the time in terms of build quality and price they simply could not compete.
