Hey, is that Chris Cornell doing vocals on that Winery Dogs song?

It's actually Richie Kotzen, but he sounds scarily close to Chris Cornell. Never a bad thing.

And yes, agreed on Peter Steele. Great (underrated) player, face-melting tone.

I'd like to resurrect this thread for the bass sound on the album "Going Blank Again" by Ride:

Punchy and aggressive, and has a bit of grind to it without being overbearing. I like the guitar sounds too.

It's just a really great-sounding album in general. Good band.
An excellent bass sound indeed - one of my favourites. Just as good on the previous album too - if you've not heard it already, have a listen to Taste in particular:

I have to add this one, which just came on my iTunes shuffle... I have to admit to having had the album for ages but never really noticed it before!

In the intro, and again at about 2'50".

Are my speakers playing up or is that quite overdriven/a little fuzzy? Pretty cool!

Definitely crunchy-fuzzy! Not what I expected from them at all - the rest of their sound is quite gentle as you probably know. It's fairly subtle really - only plays for a few seconds and is quite low in the mix. I noticed it because I had the music cranked through my old giant workshop cab and it really brought it out.

+1 Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai) and subsequent bassists. Two songs come to mind:-
"Canned Heat" - (nice full, smooth and rounded sound)
"Starchild" - (bass sits so well with the clavinet)

Pino Palladino on "Tear Your Playhouse Down" (fretless and an octaver)

Pat Badger of Extreme and guy from Queensryche had a great sound as did Bernard Edwards.

  • +1 for Dean Garcia's tones with Curve and SPC ECO. From what I understand, part of that is a result of him not changing his strings since the dawn of time! I love SPC ECO. They're probably my favourite new band. One of my friends plays occasional guitar for them using pedals that I built for him. I'm pretty fond of Simon Gallup's tones on the Faith and Pornography albums. Simon Raymonde too, especially on the song Fotzepolitic.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

I think I've seen videos where he's playing with what look like leather gloves on too.

  • Wolstenholme in muse has some great ones, like the synthy one in City of Delusion.

Flea from RHCP. He has some amazing sounds, just listen to... Er.. Pretty much any RHCP album.

I also really liked the basic, but so important, tone in the pixies. It was perfectly suited, and that's how a good bass should be. I also love goliath by karnivool, which sounds MASSIVE.
