+1 Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai) and subsequent bassists. Two songs come to mind:-
"Canned Heat" - (nice full, smooth and rounded sound)
"Starchild" - (bass sits so well with the clavinet)
Pino Palladino on "Tear Your Playhouse Down" (fretless and an octaver)
Pat Badger of Extreme and guy from Queensryche had a great sound as did Bernard Edwards.
I said maybe.....
"You don't know what you've got till the whole thing's gone. The days are dark and the road is long."

Flea from RHCP. He has some amazing sounds, just listen to... Er.. Pretty much any RHCP album.
I also really liked the basic, but so important, tone in the pixies. It was perfectly suited, and that's how a good bass should be. I also love goliath by karnivool, which sounds MASSIVE.
