Wear a face mask and  do it by a window if you've no balcony - it is literally only a single squirt, hardly any vapour expelled.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Thanks @WezV  - however, if I use the technique described by @Roland  I won’t need to debride the headstock.

Are all polyurethane varnishes very similar in composition? Like this one:
Rust-Oleum 400ml Polyurethane Varnish Spray Paint - Clear Gloss https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001W03PR2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_SCKYZHVACJYM4P068QVA

And why apply Tru-Oil again over the varnish, rather than a few more coats of varnish spray?

Just a thought - if I were to spray two very thin coats of polyurethane lacquer over the decal even before I waterslide it onto the headstock, would that fix the ink such that if I were to lightly brush on Tru Oil thereafter, the ink would no longer run...?

yes that is the advised method when using waterslides.
make them "dust coats" and you'll be fine.

My answer to that is No. I print my own water transfers, then coat them with polyurethane spray varnish so that the ink doesn’t wash off in water. However, if I don’t overspray the transfer once applied it still lifts and buckle with Tru-Oil.
