@steven70 ;;;, friends in Rome tell me there are police stationed at the end of their street. They need to request permission to go to the shops, and are given a curfew by which time they need to be back home. Clearly in that situation, going for a run would be out of the question.

I find it really hard to believe anything like that being implemented in the UK (even in major cities, never mind in somewhere like Cambridge where I live) - but then if you'd asked me a month ago I'd have said the same about Italy.

So far, our government seems to be following a very different strategy from other countries, even near neighbours such as France and Germany. Time will tell whether or not that was the right call.

Like you, I would find it really hard to go without a daily dose of exercise - my normal routine is a short commute by bike Monday to Friday, and three runs per week. The idea of just doing burpees in the garden doesn't really appeal ...

3 x 6.5 mile runs this week. I may do a slightly longer one tomorrow.

  • Treadmills bore the piss out of me. A big part of the attraction of running to me is fresh air and scenery.

That said, someone at work was selling a static bike the other day. Starting to wonder whether that might have been a good investment given the circumstances.

Honestly, I can go for days (weeks) in my own company (I may even get good on the guitar) but the idea of not working up a sweat fills me with dread.

Also, what other kinds of workout can one do at home if not running?  Am pretty much addicted to a decent cardio session each day or I'll go up the wall. Got a pull up bar and a skipping rope but there is only so much of that one can do.

Genuine question and constructive suggestions and ideas appreciated.

    Cheers.

Get thee some 16oz boxing gloves and do some shadow boxing. Or if you’ve got the space buy a punchbag as well.

16oz gloves will make you work harder and keep the heart rate up - you could use a small dumbbell in each hand but then for me you lose a bit of the boxing technique.

If you like getting a sweat on its gonna be right up your street. There’s loads of YouTube vids to help with both shadow boxing and bag workouts.

Also think about grabbing yourself a kettlebell - there’s loads you can do with them.

I tend to do a mix of shadow boxing, kettlebell and body weight exercise at home on my non-gym days.

Tonight I went to the gym though and did 2k on the rower and 30 mins on the bags.

Actually if you’re flush you could buy a concept 2 rowing machine or ski erg - great workout on both.

Hey, thanks @Iamnobody - superb ideas and advice, and good things to be getting into, 'interesting times' or not.

I did look into rowing machines (I row at the gym), but the Concept2 is a lot of money and a think cheaper options may not be up to the job.

I'm intrigued by the boxing workout and will invest in a set of gloves and a punchbag. It'll be a mental discipline as well.
Also, picked up a jump rope, something else to learn.

    Thank you

No worries. I hope it helps.

As a former concept 2 owner I wouldn’t buy anything else - some people like water rowers but they are equally expensive.

Target price for a used concept 2 Model D is ~ £450-500. I’d have no problem buying used - my old one was a reconditioned unit from a commercial gym but as every part is replaceable they go for ever.

I’ll get another soon - or maybe the ski erg as it takes up less space...

In terms of the shadow boxing here’s two channels that I’d check out:

    https://m.youtube.com/user/NateBowerFitness

    https://m.youtube.com/user/tripleVVV3

If you can get a bag as well those channels have some decent heavy bag routines.

My stats for lasts night’s 2k row and ~ 35 mins bag work were:

    Time: 47:45
    Ave heart rate: 157bpm
    Cal: 717

That compares well to running in terms of the stats.

Superb! I'll check out the channels. Yep, that's a proper workout...I will enjoy getting into some of this.

OK, I'll let the thread get back to running...
Lazy 9 miles along the seafront this morning - lovely Spring day.

    Start weight 6 Jan 14st, current weight 12st 6lbs.

Interestingly my blood pressure has plummeted to ideal range and resting heart rate is 50 bpm too.

Hey @Deadman how do you get up to 200 press ups a day?
I started doing the 'ten every minute for ten minutes' thing but still crap....any pointers appreciated.

10 miles this morning, lovely day and beautiful sunshine.

@steven70 I couldn’t do 10 when I started (6 weeks ago). So I simply started the 100 push up challenge and can manage 25 (good form) in a set now. That’s a great programme for building your reps. So I simply do 2 sets of 25, 4 times a day. Generally 1 before breakfast, 1 around lunchtime, 1 mid afternoon and 1 evening.

2 x 6.5 and 1 x 9 mile run last week. I'm not sure how many more I can get in. Actually I may just have to change my routes away from the river front and canal.

Superb- thank you. That's something to get stuck into...I need these little plans at the moment, let's see what progress can make. Cheers :)

Running veto'ed. :( I can run in the garden, apparently. I would probably do far better fasting to make sure I still have a body to get back into running with when all this dies down.
