how about one of these Belcat analogue delays for 20 quid. i've had one on my pedal board for about 5 years now. got great reviews when it first came out.

You're dead right. The Belcat's a decent sounding delay but not analogue. I had one and loved the sound, but I sold it on because what I wanted above all was a nice analogue delay that would sound great AND let me play UFOs and make other funny sounds with self-oscillation.
the Memory Toy was a bit noisy for me, but the adjustable modulation depth was nice
@cbilly22 or OP. I've got a Carl Martin Red Repeat that I bought from here a few months back (the good one - square metal case). It's boxed and in great shape. Might be persuaded to part with it. Much better than a cheapo you'd get for a similar price.
I paid £40 posted, and will be happy to do it for that.
Its in this thread http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/14400/fs-pedal-clearout-volume-2#latest
There's even a new battery in there.
I prefer gain before delay if I'm honest. Horses for courses and all that. I find echo into crunch a bit lo-fi sounding.
I use delay in the loop if I'm relying on the amp for drive. If I'm using pedals or an FX processor I'll put delay in the front, but then have the amp sound fairly clean, but strong.
