I was about to post something similar . It was barely used by either John or George and when I saw the current owner playing it on breakfast TV I could hear why

  • Total nonsense. Rare but undesirable. The guitars I build are rare too, George Harrison would probably have given away one that I gave him - wouldn’t give it any value.

If it was actually put up for auction I'd be very surprised if it went for as much as a tenth of that.

Some obsessives will pay crazy money for anything Beatle-related.

If, during a house clearance, a screw top glass jar were found, purportedly containing a Beatle fart, some collector would buy it.  B)

Saw the owner playing it on Antiques Roadshow last night, sounded shite.

It did but I think that was more to do with the player. I just about got it when he was murdering Come Together, but what was the closing piece supposed to be?

There is still a huge market for Beatle Memorabelia, especially in Japan.  Yes, £400k is crazy money but look at how much some of the lesser played David Gilmour stuff went for last year.  There are a lot of people in the world for whom £400k is an impulse buy.

It was obviously running through the small board he had at his feet - didn't spend the time working out what was on it, but delay was involved somewhere. In some respects, that's a shame, as I would quite like to have heard it without the effects.

"a guitar that was once owned by both John Lennon and George Harrison, can you get a better history?"

Maybe one either of them actually played?

Yes... one of the two J-160Es that John and George owned, swapped at some point, and which both of them played on countless Beatle records and performances. Paul most likely played them too.

Even the Maton George used at the last Cavern gig - which is referenced in the BBC article as presumably some sort of justification for the price - was actually played by him in public and photographed.

Fretless guitar is a whole different head space, even compared to fretless bass. Single notes and double stops are manageable in standard tuning. Triads and upwards demand open tunings.
