Any takers?

Bishops Waltham isn’t far from me but I couldn’t live there as despite what the article says, it’s too far from anywhere good, if you don’t have use of a car/are too pissed to drive.

We did look around the town when we were looking to move to Hants, but got put off as when we were looking in the estate agents window, a couple of local teens rode past on their bikes and called me a fat cunt.  So yeah....I mean, I am... but I don’t expect to be told so when strolling round a relatively quiet market town on a Sunday morning.
The lack of public transport and unruly youths were enough to encourage us to look elsewhere. Best decision ever as it goes... Southampton Parkway to Waterloo is an easy journey and takes over an hour.

I live in Hadley Wood which is near Barnet, it's a very nice area 9 miles closer to London than St Albans which was number 1 on the list

The usual journalistic bollocks. St Albans was already too crowded for me thirty years ago, and that hasn’t eased. Last time I was in Bishop Stortford the high street was full of closed shops. And the sky full of Stansted flights. The other places might be nice, but I don’t think there’s any evidence behind the article.

I can think of a lot more than fifteen.

Some of those are stretching the definition of ‘just outside’, aren’t they?

I’m familiar with Guildford, Chichester, Caversham (daughter lives there), Farnham (son lives there), and Bishops Stortford. They’re ok to visit, but I wouldn’t actually want to live in any of them.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Yup, and now there’s an article saying they’re desirable the price has just gone up another 10%.

When I worked for BT we had a job in Caversham, I remember we were looking for somewhere to eat (always the first priority on a new job) and found a little cafe for a cooked breakfast. FOURTEEN quid each.  :o

Ok, so best places within commuting-ish distance of London? Let’s say 2 hours?

    Oxford
    Cambridge
    Paris
    Milan
    Edinburgh
Reykjavik if you don’t mind another hour on the plane.
    Bruges looks lovely too

Otherwise you can prioritise by guitar shops, in which case:
    Stevenage (Coda)
    Guildford (Andertons)
    Farnham (Guitar Village)
The Assumptions - UAE party band for all your rock & soul desires

Sevenoaks is as dull as ditchwater ...and particularly uninspiring ditchwater, at that!
Not much of the gear, even less idea.

Can almost throw a stone to The Railway from my place.

    Re: that list:

Brockenhurst - There may be plenty of restaurants (well, tea-rooms) but there's bugger-all else.
    Ditto Bishop's Waltham.
Caversham really isn't separate from Reading (and hasn't been for about 100 years), though it's probably the nicest bit of it.
    Farnham's quite nice.

And it's on the George & Amal side of Reading :)
