Homemade pedal board input/output sockets

What's Hot

I'm going to make my own pedal board and like the idea of having the input/putput sockets on either side of the board.

Firstly where do I buy these and also are they easy to fix (how do I wire them to the first pedal in my chain)?

Do you mean like these kind of things ?

These are a couple I made a few years back for an older board of mine. Enclosures are rubbed down and then labelled.

You just need an enclosure and the sockets, then wire them (teh scokets) inside together to make the patch.

Then have say guiar > patch box in, patch box out >  Boss SD-1 in > SD-1 out > other pedals > delay in > delay out > patch box return in > patch box return out > amp input

The larger box is the first, and the smaller box is the other

I mean more this kind of thinghttp://www.soundexposure.com/store/Neutrik-NJ3FP6CBAG.html?gclid=CLaql6v4gb8CFSf3wgodCD8APA

Input on one side of the board and output on the other

I've found them at Studio Spares so buying them and fitting them to the board is easy. The unknown to me is how I then solder that and connect it to my first pedal. Anyone able to help?

If I went that way, what would you want for them?

Get two of those studiospares things. Solder them to a bit of wire. Then solder that wire to a jack. Then plug the jacks into the first and last pedals of your chain.

I can't really help you on the bare socket idea, it'd take a fair bit of 'engineering' to make it look neat if you wanted to attach it solidly to your board.

If you want my patchboxes I'd take £30 posted for both :)

Using just standard guitar cable /patch lead cable?

If you're having a patch box at either end and you're going to do some soldering anyway, maybe either one or both could be a buffer?

If I were doing this, I'd buy a couple of buffer kits from Poodle Pedal Parts.

I have a buffer anyway. Depending on how my build goes I may end up just going straight in/out of the pedals as normal. I'd just seen the Neutrik sockets on a number of boards and liked the idea so if I can I'll try and get them working. Their only about £5 each too

I've got a Neutrik locking jack input on my home-made board.  I drilled a big hole with a shovel bit (From memory I'm going to say 24mm but I might be wrong, so check yourself first) in the little bit of 2x1 that holds my raised back row up.  Snipped and stripped one end of a patch cable and soldered to the back of the panel-mount socket.  There's three tabs on there that are marked T (Tip) R (Ring) and S (Sleeve).  We guitarists only need to work about T and S - solder the core of your cable to the T terminal and the screen to S, ignore R.  Feed it all through the hole, screw the socket to the wood, plug into your first pedal and you're done!  Unfortunately no photos to hand but I'll try and grab one next time I'm in our lock up.  Worth doing though, you'll never worry about pulling your cable out on stage again.

I haven't done one on the output side as there isn't anywhere to physically locate it - I've been considering a back panel but I'd be worried about leaving my cables at the mercy of drunken wedding punters and their lumbering dance floor feet - sometimes they get too close for comfort!

I did it on a board I built a year or two ago. Worked really well and made life a lot easier. Can't remember how to wire them but a quick google search and you'll find it. I did take them off and they're now going spare. 4 of @ £2 each plus postage?

They are indeed. I got a couple of cheap ones from Mapins and they were utter garbage. Buy it cheap buy it twice and all that!

I reckon the postage would only be a couple of quid so you'd save a bit.

Thanks for that - really useful.  A picture of yours would be useful to help me with my soldering/wiring

I've used these in the past, and loved them, sturdy for sure.  Need a small amount of soldering knowledge, but worth it

Canford are pretty good for neutrik stuff. I use them all the time at work and for guitar things.
